Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott has been forced to pull out of the England Under-21 squad due to an injury.
Lee Carsley’s Young Lions take on Kosovo in a 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier on Tuesday evening and Elliott was expected to make his debut at Stadium MK after a strong start to the season with Liverpool.
Tottenham winger Ryan Sessegnon has also withdrawn from Carsley’s squad after sustaining a knock in training.
Aston Villa midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been promoted from the England MU19s as a replacement for the injured duo and could make his U21 debut Milton Keynes.
Liverpool’s Curtis Jones will not be involved as he is serving a suspension following his sending back in April as England crashed out of the European Under-21 Championship at the hands of Croatia.
Newly-appointed England U21 boss Carsley said it was the ‘right time’ for Elliott to make the step up after naming the midfielder in his first squad last month.
‘I watched a lot of his games at Blackburn,’ he explained.
‘You are always cautious to see how they will get on in a first-team environment, especially in the Championship which is a tough physical league. He is an exciting player who creates a lot of chances.
‘The way [the Blackburn manager] Tony Mowbray played put Harvey into some really good positions where he affected games with goals and assists.
‘He has carried that on in pre-season and showed that by getting minutes at Liverpool, which is not an easy team to get into.
‘It is the right time for Harvey to come in and it was great having the phone call with him.’
