Police arrested 23 people on a night of raucous England celebrations in the capital.

Fans climbed onto double decker buses and scaled phone boxes in central London after watching the Three Lions’ 2-1 win over Denmark.

It sent them to the final of Euro 2020 and supporters basked in the moment – but some apparently took it too far.

Officers in riot gear were sent in to break up a huge post-game party on the streets of Piccadilly Circus.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said people were detained on suspicion of a range of offences, including attacking an officer.

They said: ‘As part of the policing operation following the England v Denmark game, 23 arrests were made by officers across London for a number of offences including common assault, public order and assault on police.’

Similar scenes are expected when England take on Italy in the final at 8pm on Sunday at Wembley.

The Met’s deputy assistant commissioner Laurence Taylor said unless fans have a ticket to the game or a pub booking, they should stay at home.

He said: ‘The Met is very well prepared for the increase in fans. We have a very experienced policing team in place and will continue to prevent crime and disorder and respond effectively to any incidents. We have deployed a great many officers and specialist units.

‘We want people to be able to enjoy the Euros 2020 safely and securely. London still remains in a public health crisis. There are Government guidelines in place and we ask people to follow these and remain socially distanced.

‘My message is clear: If you don’t have a ticket to the matches, fan zone or officially booked into a pub, bar or club, please do not come to London – you could end up missing the game.’

Last night a sea of England fans poured out of pubs and the nearby Trafalgar Square fan zone in central London and flocked to the streets for wild celebrations.

England fan Vic Richards, 22, said: ‘I’m still trying to compute what happened, I’ve never seen England make a final.

‘It’s beautiful, it’s unbelievable, I love this country. The players gave it their all.

‘This is an historic occasion, we may never see this again – now we can start to believe.’

Many fans tried to stay out late to enjoy the win after the final whistle blew around 10.30pm.

A few dozen supporters in Leicester Square climbed on top of a number 9 double-decker bus to Aldwych, cheering and holding a St George’s flag aloft.

Flares were set off before the crowds were broken up by officers in riot gear.

England are now poised to take on Italy in the Euros on Sunday in the first tournament final they’ve reached in 55 years.
