Manchester United could be without Marcus Rashford until the end of October after the forward decided to press ahead with surgery on a worrying shoulder issue.

The 23-year-old has been plagued with the issue since 2020 but it worsened in the second half of the campaign.

Rashford barely featured in the European Championships but he did, of course, miss a crucial penalty in the shootout defeat to Italy at Wembley on Sunday night.

United had hoped that an extended period of rest would allow Rashford to avoid surgery but a scan on his shoulder on Tuesday showed that the issue had worsened, meaning he has no option but to go under the knife.

The club are understandably frustrated and wanted the operation to go ahead as soon as possible but according to the BBC, the preferred surgeon is not available until the end of this month – adding two weeks on to Rashford’s recovery time.

Rashford will miss three months of action, meaning the earliest he can return is late October.

That would see the forward miss at least nine Premier League matches and up to three Champions League group games.

The news is a blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but the addition of Jadon Sancho should help to cushion the blow.

The Dortmund winger was undergoing a medical at Carrington today and United hope to announce his arrival in the next 36 hours.

Sancho was bought to play on the right but he’s adept in Rashford’s favoured position on the left.
