Martin Keown hailed the ‘intelligence’ of Chelsea star Mason Mount after he netted in England’s 2-0 World Cup qualifier win over Albania on Sunday.

Mount has become a firm favourite in England boss Gareth Southgate’s setup and he capped off another solid display with a cool clipped finish just beyond the hour mark in Tirana.

Captain Harry Kane had put the Three Lions in front with a fine header seven minutes before half-time, latching onto a ball from Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw.

But Keown, the former Arsenal defender, feels Mount’s intelligence played a key role in the opening goal.

‘Mason Mount has started England’s last seven games, proving himself a useful player to Gareth Southgate because of his intelligence,’ Keown told the Daily Mail.

‘As an England defender, when you roll the ball to Mount you know it’s not coming back. He’s going to turn and make something happen.

Sporting stadiums around Europe remain under strict restrictions due to the Coronavirus Pandemic as Government social distancing laws prohibit fans inside venues resulting in games being played behind closed doors.

‘He became vital in the build-up play, and it meant Harry Kane could remain higher up the pitch.

‘In another sign of Mount’s intelligence, the opening goal came as a result of England creating an overload on the left.

‘The Chelsea midfielder cut the ball back to Luke Shaw, who crossed for Kane to head home. When Mount was through on goal to make it 2-0, there was no doubt he’d score.’

Keown was also full of praise for Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, who was handed a start by Southgate.

‘Phil Foden, as someone who has shown a perfect understanding of Pep Guardiola’s rotational system at Manchester City, is another who can grasp whatever Southgate wants from him,’ added Keown.

‘In Foden and Mount, 20 and 22 respectively, England have two intelligent players.’
