Melania Trump has yet to acknowledge incoming First Lady Jill Biden after her husband Donald lost the election to Jill’s spouse Joe. Washington DC sources say the current first lady is acting as if President Trump did not lose last week’s election, and shunning the traditional polite meet-and-greet with her successor.
A source told CNN: ‘It’s my understanding that it’s business as usual in the East Wing.’ The same mole added that the first lady’s congratulations to Jill Biden may be on hold because of her husband’s refusal to concede, not because she is being rude.
They said: ‘I’m not sure it’s fair for anyone to expect them to start transitioning when the president has not yet conceded. If the Ppesident concedes, I’m sure the East Wing will be gracious and professional to the incoming administration, that’s just how they work.’
Former First Lady Laura Bush’s chief of staff Anita McBride agreed that Melania faces the ‘complicated’ issue of her husband’s continued claims that he has won the election, despite electoral college votes showing otherwise.
The first lady has previously publicly disagreed with President Trump’s policies, with acquaintances believing she will act appropriately if and when her husband finally accepts victory.
Former White House staffers say the delay caused by President Trump not conceding will make the already complex transition from one couple to another even more stressful.
Staff for the first family must organize run-of-the-mill tasks such as moving the Bidens’ belongings, measuring up drapes, filling fridges – and choreographing election day down to the last minute.
President-elect Biden said on Tuesday that his team have begun the transition process, and that he is relaxed about Trump’s current behavior.
Biden called the president’s behavior ‘an embarrassment’ and said Trump risked damaging his own legacy.
