Lorde will no longer be performing at the MTV Video Music Awards 2021 leaving fans devastated.

The Royals singer was due to promote her new album Solar Power at the star-studded awards ceremony, taking place at the Barclays Center in New York on September 12.

Announcing the news, a tweet on the VMAs Twitter account read: ‘Due to a change in production elements, Lorde can no longer perform at this year’s show. We love Lorde and cannot wait for her to perform on the VMA stage in the future!’

It would have been Lorde’s first performance at the VMAs since 2017 when she performed Homemade Dynamite.

Reacting to the news, one fan said: ‘Currently still mulling over Lorde’s canceled VMA performance. WHAT WAS THE REASON.’

One joked: ‘Lorde needed the actual Sun and VMA failed to provide it, yeah I understand her reasons now…’

‘Lorde no longer performing at the VMA’s will I ever catch a break,’ another said.

The 24-year-old released her new album in July and it arrived to positive reviews, however, the singer admitted her future music would struggle to compete with the success of her breakout hit Royals.

Speaking to The New York Times, she said: ‘There’s definitely not a smash. It makes sense that there wouldn’t be a smash, because I don’t even know really what the smashes are now.’

Lorde has also promised herself not to work under the pressure of trying to repeat the success of Royals.

‘What a lost cause. Can you imagine? I’m under no illusion. That was a moonshot,’ she reflected.

Other stars confirmed to perform at this year’s VMAs, include Lil Nas X, first-time nominee Olivia Rodrigo, Camilla Cabello and Machine Gun Kelly.

The MTV Video Music Awards 2021 take place on Sunday, September 12.
