Kyrgios, playing his first tournament outside of Australia since February, 2020, admitted his body was struggling after he’d played mixed doubles with Venus Williams on Friday.
And although he won the first set against the Canadian, he decided to throw in the towel at the end of the second set.
‘I can’t roll my arm over anymore,’ said Kyrgios to the physio at the changeover at the end of the second set. ‘I can’t serve anymore.’
In an unusual move, both players spoke to the crowd after the match, with Kyrgios confirming it was an ab issue.
‘I haven’t played this level of tennis in a long time,’ said Kyrgios on court. ‘And obviously playing someone as good as Felix, I need my main weapon – my serve – to be firing on all cylinders and I just felt my ab.
‘Definitely did something to it towards the end of the first set. That’s just the way it goes.
‘He’s a hell of a player, he’s going to do some special things in this sport.
‘Playing out here and having this kind of support, has made me have a second wind. I reckon I’m gonna come back and play for a bit longer I reckon.’
