Welbeck scored the opening goal at Old Trafford as United delivered a woeful performance in the first 45 minutes.
United raised their game in the second half and Marcus Rashford pulled the hosts level before Mason Greenwood’s header from close range with seven minutes remaining secured the three points for Solskjaer’s side.
Welbeck began his career at United’s academy at the age of eight and was coached by Solskjaer in the reserves before making his first-team debut.
United opted to sell Welbeck to Arsenal in 2014 but the forward has since struggled with several injuries after leaving Old Trafford.
But Solskjaer made a point of praising Welbeck following his return to Old Trafford and believes the 30-year-old could have had a ‘fantastic’ career at United.
‘They defended very well. Five at the back is always hard to break down but we managed it in the end,’ Solskjaer told BT Sport after the game.
‘It’s great to see Danny Welbeck back playing at his best.
