New cast details for origin movie Wonka have finally dropped, with Olivia Colman and Rowan Atkinson set to star.
According to Variety, Colman and Atkinson will join the star-studded cast of the movie fronted by Timothée Chalamet.
Wonka tells the story of Willy Wonka – the much-loved character from Roald Dhal classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Little details are known about the upcoming film, but reports claim it will delve into the backstory of Wonka and how he first developed his sweet tooth – years before opening his world-renowned chocolate factory.
Chalamet was first attached to the movie and will take on the role of Wonka, following in the footsteps of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp who have previously played the iconic character.
Details surrounding the roles Colman, who fans recently saw as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, and Atkinson, who is best known for playing Mr Bean, will play are yet to be revealed.
Paddington star Sally Hawkins will also be joining the movie’s cast, as well as Matt Lucas and Sex Education star Rakhee Thakrar, who plays teacher Emily Sands in the hit Netflix series.
Wonka is the third adaptation to be released on the big screen and according to Deadline, it’s set to be a musical much like the first movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory released in 1971.
Wonka is a co-production between The Roald Dahl Story Co. and Warner Bros, who were previously involved in Tim Burton’s 2005 take on the tale starring Depp as Willy Wonka.
The new movie will be based on a screenplay penned by Paul King and Simon Farnaby (of Paddington 2 and Horrible Histories fame) and produced by David Heyman.
Heyman will produce via his Heyday Films company which was behind the Harry Potter movies.
Since the origin movie was confirmed, Wonka faced backlash from some fans who questioned whether it should be made.
However, actress Julie Dawn Cole, who played Veruca Salt in the Willy Wonka original, defended the prequel and insisted it’s a ‘brilliant idea’.
Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, Cole gave her seal of approval as she said: ‘I look forward to it!’
Of Chalamet’s casting as Wonka, she added: ‘It’s interesting, isn’t it? Because he’ll have to step into both [Gene and Johnny’s] shoes. I’m sure he’ll do his complete own spin on it!’
Wonka is slated for release in 2023.
