Week 8 holds potential reason for Patriots to trade Stephon Gilmore

Stephon Gilmore, Bill Belichick, Patriots

The Week 8 proceedings could be pivotal for NFL teams especially for the New England Patriots and their top cornerback in Stephon Gilmore, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. Sunday’s matchups will only be a day before the league trade deadline slated on November 3. The outcomes of the games can ultimately dictate a franchise and its players’ fate for the remainder of the season.

The 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year was recently involved in swirling trade rumors regarding his potential departure from Foxborough. The former South Carolina standout just recently came back from a positive case of COVID-19 and has one year left on his contract at a $17 million cap hit.

The Patriots already attempted to part ways with Gilmore as they previously shopped him before the 2020 NFL Draft and later during training camp to no avail. The speculations regarding his relocation were amplified when the 30-year-old’s home went on the market.

The listing for the house located in Foxborough was reported to belong to Gilmore’s wife which included the line: “All offers if any due on Tuesday, November 3rd @ 5PM.” The trade deadline just happens to be on the same day and ends at 4 PM.

According to Florio, the Detroit Lions could be a possible destination for Gilmore, with Gilmore engaging in a trade that landed them defensive end Everson Griffen from the Dallas Cowboys. The result of their matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday could dictate their participation in the trade deadline.

The Patriots hold a 2-4 standing to nab third place in the AFC East division while the Lions sit at an even 3-3 record for the third spot in the NFC North.

Week 8 proceedings will potentially answer whether or not Gilmore will still wear the colors of the Patriots or those of another team for the remainder of the season.
