Peaky Blinders writer admits it could continue without Cillian Murphy

The creator of Peaky Blinders has admitted that it could continue without its lead Cillian Murphy after season six… although he affirms that it would be ‘impossible’ for it to work without the actor in its current form.

The sixth season of Peaky Blinders is currently in production, with Cillian returning as head of the family Tommy Shelby for the crime drama’s final outing.

Cillian, 44, has been spotted on several occasions recently filming on set, with one incident showing the actor seemingly ‘throwing up’ while in character as the Birmingham-based gangster.

During a recent interview, Steven Knight, who created and co-wrote the show, spoke about the future of the Peaky Blinders universe once season six is done and dusted.

While discussing his hopes for a Peaky Blinders film, the screenwriter said: ‘In the form it is in, it is absolutely impossible for this to work without Cillian.’

However, he added that this doesn’t mean Peaky Blinders couldn’t take on a new form without the seasoned lead.

‘As it grows and progresses, who knows? There may be worlds that are part of the Peaky world that are about someone else but he is the centre around everything orbits,’ Steven said of Cillian.

Speaking to BirminghamLive, Steven said that a potential Peaky Blinders film – which he hopes can be filmed in the West Midlands city – ’wouldn’t be [the] final act’ of the thrilling drama.

‘It will go on in another form, which will be the film, and beyond that we want to keep the world going,’ he stated, explaining that the initial plan was to film seven seasons of Peaky Blinders before the coronavirus pandemic got in the way.

‘In other words, the story of Small Heath and the Shelby family will continue on,’ he added.

‘I want to keep it going until… whenever.’

Last month, Cillian was spotted filming a major Tommy moment alongside Paul Anderson as his on-screen brother Arthur Shelby.

In the scenes, which were being filmed in Liverpool, the pair made their way to the city’s historic St George’s Hall, before a tense confrontation between anti-Fascism protesters and police took place.

Peaky Blinders is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
