Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has described Erling Haaland as ‘a b******’ to play against following his side’s slender first-leg victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

The Norwegian forward is set to be the biggest transfer of the summer, with his father – former player Alf-Inge – and agent Mino Raiola already speaking to Barcelona and Real Madrid about a move while talks with City, Chelsea and Liverpool are planned.

Although he did not score against City in Tuesday’s quarter-final clash at the Etihad, he showed plenty of glimpses of why he is so in-demand, notably bodying the usually imperious Ruben Dias.

Haaland also set up Dortmund’s goal in the 2-1 defeat, playing a cute pass in behind for Marco Reus, and Guardiola admitted it was extremely difficult to try and contain the German side and their hotshot striker.

Asked if he was surprised by Dortmund’s performance and approach, Guardiola told DAZN after the game: ‘No not surprised because it happened in the game against Bayern Munich, playing five at the back and they’re [used to] playing in that system.

‘The quality of Dahoud and Bellingham and of course the pace of the people up front. So the quality is there, we know it.

‘When you want to press they play long balls, they play long balls to Haaland. Haaland is a b****** – the link with him is always perfect and after they have the pace.

‘So we knew it’s not easy to control them, but at the same time we had the rhythm to play and had chances in the right moment.

‘We missed them, but in the end we found [a winner] with an exceptional action from Kevin, Gundo and Phil and won the game.’

Although City have been heavily linked with Haaland as they target a long-term heir to the departing Sergio Aguero, they may be priced out of a move for the £100m-rated Dortmund superstar – though Guardiola was full of praise for the forward before their meeting.

‘To score that number of goals at his age is not easy,’ said the Spanish coach earlier this week.

‘He’s 20 years old and the numbers speak for themselves. When that happens it’s because he can score with the right, the left, via counterattacks, in the box. He’s a fantastic striker, everyone knows it.’
