Princess Diana’s old Ford Escort has sold at auction for £52,640.

The silver 1.6L Ghia saloon was snapped up by a museum in Chile on Tuesday and far exceeded the pre-auction estimate of £30,000 to £40,000.

The vehicle had been an engagement present from Prince Charles just two months before their wedding in July 1981.

Diana stopped using the car after giving birth to Prince William in 1982 before it was bought by an antiques dealer for £6,000.

It was owned by a woman from around the year 2000 onwards and she would only drive it on rare occasions with friends. She never revealed the car’s history.

It will now be shipped to Chile after selling over the telephone at an online auction held by Reeman Dansie in Colchester, Essex.

Lewis Rabett, of Reeman Dansie Auctions, said: ‘The interest has been considerable pre-auction.

‘Ending up in South America is testament to the level of interest globally that there’s been in the car. It’s also testament to Diana and her enduring legacy.’

The vehicle has 83,000 miles on the clock and retains the same licence plate (WEV 297W), as well as its original paint and upholstery.

The Princess of Wales is a beloved figure in Chile. In 2010 the Museo de la Moda in Santiago purchased her first official gown for a whopping £192,000.

The couture item, seen as a risque choice at the time, was declared a piece of fashion history by the museum.

Diana tragically died during a car crash while being chased by paparazzi through the streets of Paris in 1997.

Princes Harry and William will reveal a statue in tribute to their mother in the Kensington Palace gardens on July 1.
