The talented pair, who share 11 Ballon d’Or awards between them, both completed sensational moves this summer in an exciting transfer window.
First, Messi was forced out of Barcelona after the club couldn’t sign him to a new deal and ultimately reunited with Neymar at PSG on a free transfer.
If that move wasn’t big enough for football fans, just two weeks later Ronaldo agreed a sensational return to United after opting to leave Juventus.
And while the fanfare around the Portuguese’s return is yet to quieten down, according to The Athletic, PSG believe they have completed the most talked about transfer in Twitter history.
PSG have reportedly carried out internal calculations, based on analysis of mentions in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic and all languages in the Latin alphabet, and concluded that in the first seven days since announcing his signing, the number of mentions about Messi and PSG is higher than those of Ronaldo and United.
But PSG’s commercial team are confident Messi’s reunion with Neymar, along with Kylian Mbappe will bring a whole host of exciting marketing and sponsorship opportunities.
PSG’s reluctance to part with Mbappe despite Real Madrid’s mammoth offer €200m (£171.7m) shows their intent at winning the Champions League this year.
The French giants know if Messi helps them win their maiden Champions League title this season the legacy of the ongoing project at PSG will receive a huge boost that will only benefit the club financially in the coming years.
While Messi has been brought in at the Parc des Princes to help PSG win the Champions League, the pressure will be on Ronaldo to deliver United the Premier League title.
And it’s a challenge former Red Devils captain Roy Keane can’t wait to see him take on.
‘I was surprised when it all happened [Ronaldo move to Man Utd],’ Keane said.
‘There was talk he was going to City and to be back at Man United and I know some will doubt it but we saw it last night, he’s a different player to when he left, his football intelligence was fantastic last night.
‘[It’s] great for the league, United needed a lift. I can’t wait to see him again back at United.’
