A retired teacher allegedly offered Bitcoin for someone to kill his wife as she made a trip to a veterinarian appointment. Nelson Paul Replogle faces murder for hire charges as the FBI claims he tried to pay for a hitjob targeting his wife Ann Replogle.

The FBI Cyber Task Force received a tip from the BBC about at a threat to Ann’s life, WATE reported on Friday. FBI Knoxville in Tennessee then informed the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, which conducted a welfare check on the Replogles.

Officials from two law enforcement agencies met with Nelson and Anne and both said they could not think of anyone with intentions to hurt her.

Nelson ‘was separated and interviewed alone and advised he did not solicit the murder of his wife and that he could not think of anyone who did,’ states an FBI affidavit obtained by Law & Crime.

Then, BBC provided more details including the date and time of Ann’s vet visit and the model and color of her car. The FBI received evidence of a payment to be made to murder Ann as she ‘traveled from her residence to the veterinarian’s office while taking her pet for an appointment’.

The FBI successfully linked the Bitcoin account to the CoinBase app and found the IP address for the offer maker. CoinBase records showed a transaction from Nelson’s savings account.

Nelson was arrested on April 21 and on Tuesday, a judge ruled that he would be held without bond. He is due back in court later this month.

A guilty verdict for murder for hire carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years in the absence of personal injury and a fine of up to $250,000.

Nelson is a former teacher at Thornapple Kellogg Schools in Michigan and offered $17,800 in Bitcoin, according to MLive.com.

It is not the only recent incident of a man allegedly offering Bitcoin for a plot to kill a significant other. Last month, neonatal physician Dr Ronald Craig Ilg was accused of attempting to hire a hitman with Bitcoin payment to kidnap his estranged wife and inject her with heroin in order to prevent her from divorcing him.
