Rio Ferdinand admitted he was quietly ‘confident’ of England progressing past Germany after the two old rivals were paired against each other in a titanic Euro 2020 last 16 match at Wembley.

With just one point to their name in Group F, Germany looked to be crashing out of the tournament as Hungary midfielder Andras Schafer scored just moments after Kai Havertz’s 66th-minute equaliser to make it 2-1 in Wednesday’s thrilling encounter in Munich.

Adam Szalai had earlier opened the scoring with a header in the 11th minute for Hungary, with Joachim Low’s players seemingly shellshocked and struggling for large periods in the first half.

But there were jubilant scenes at the Allianz Arena as second-half substitute Leon Goretza fired past Peter Gulacsi at his home stadium to level it up for Germany at the death.

The hosts held firm to progress as runners-up in the ‘group of death’ behind France which set up an enticing game against England next Tuesday evening, while Portugal progressed as a third-placed team.

After watching Germany’s less-than-convincing display versus Hungary, ex-England and Manchester United defender Ferdinand backed the Three Lions to reach the quarter-finals.

‘I think we’re just happy for two really good games of football that we saw today,’ Ferdinand said in the BBC Sport studio.

‘Knockout football awaits and England now can really focus.

‘Listen, we had an eye on the other game as well and after watching that game, I’m quite confident of a good result for England.

‘I know we’re getting excited, that’s what we do as England fans.’

Ferdinand picked out the performances of Paul Pogba and Renato Sanches for special praise after France’s 2-2 draw with Portugal, Monday night’s other enthralling match-up which did not disappoint.

‘There was some good stuff but I thought both teams lacked rhythm and consistency within their performance,’ he added.

‘In spells in the first half especially, Portugal were the better team in terms of controlling things in the game but each team had moments.

‘Pogba was outstanding today. There were some outstanding individual performances today.

‘Him and [Renato] Sanches in midfield were top.’
