There are plenty of places in our homes we might forget to clean (don’t worry, we’re not judging you for whatever’s under your couch cushions).
One of those is vacuums. After all, who thinks to clean the cleaner?
But one Facebook post has highlighted just how important it is to give our vacuum a soak every so often.
No hate, but it’s a little bit gross.
Shared on the group Mums Who Clean, a woman called Faith posted a picture of her vacuum hose soaking in the bath, saying ‘this made me feel so sick’.
As you can probably see, the water was very brown, with caked-on muck that’d accumulated over the years floating around.
Others shared Faith’s sentiments, also saying they’d never even thought about cleaning the hose.
‘OMG I’ve never done mine, I hate to think what’s in there,’ one woman wrote.
‘Doing this tomorrow,’ another said.
If you’re thinking it might be time to give your hose a hosing down, here’s what to do.
Make sure the machine is unplugged (or the battery is removed)
Detach the hose
Use a showerhead to wash out the insides
If you have a long-handled duster or brush, push this through the inside to dislodge any blockages
Soak in the bath or a bucket with hot – but not boiling – water
After around 30 minutes, give it another rinse with the shower
From there, it should look as good as new. Be sure to take a picture of your water as a cautionary tale to pals.
If you think yours might be extra dirty, or if any bad smells are lingering, adding some baking soda and vinegar (or even just good old fashioned washing up liquid) to your water will supercharge its cleaning power.
Always leave any parts to dry before reattaching to the vacuum, and check any cleaning methods against your manufacturer’s recommendations.
