Arsenal legend Sol Campbell believes Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane has all the right ingredients to be a success at Manchester United.

The 28-year-old’s contract at the Bernabeu is due to expire in the summer of 2022, and he has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Varane is also starring for France at this summer’s rescheduled Euros, putting in a solid display as Les Bleus kicked off the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Germany on Tuesday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly in the market for a centre-back to partner Harry Maguire for next season, and Campbell believes Varane would be a good option for the Red Devils due to his pace, ability on the ball and experience.

‘Varane is really good. There are shouts of him going to Manchester United because it’s not clear what’s going on at Real Madrid,’ Campbell told talkSPORT.

‘If they get him that’s a really good buy. He’s quick, he can play football, he’s been there and done it, he knows how to get through big games.

‘He knows what it means to play for big clubs. If he can handle Real Madrid he can handle Man United.’

Solskjaer is also aware United need to spend in the upcoming transfer window after finishing 12 points behind Premier League champions Manchester City last season.

‘We were the second-best team, but too far behind to threaten the champions,’ Solskjaer told TV2 earlier this month. ‘We have to strengthen ourselves.

‘Of course, something will happen in the transfer window.

‘The world has become very different than it was 15 or 16 months ago, but we have to make some moves in the transfer window and also with the team.’
