Stacey Dooley was shocked by the public interest in her romance with Kevin Clifton after her time on Strictly Come Dancing.

The documentary maker, 34, started a relationship with professional dancer Kevin, 38, after they were paired on the BBC show in 2018.

And she thought people wouldn’t be bothered that they had become more than friends.

During an appearance on Loose Women on Monday, she said: ‘I did [struggle] initially, I did at the start. I didn’t realise there would be such an interest, particularly with who I fancy and who I’m dating. I thought that was dull for everyone else.’

She added: ‘Now, Kev and I have been together for two years, so no one’s really that fussed anymore, and we’re so dull!’

Stacey first became known in 2008 on BBC Three documentary series Blood, Sweat and T-shirts before going on to make social-issue-themed programmes for the channel on a variety of topics.

She was awarded an MBE the same year she appeared on Strictly for her services to broadcasting and has presented Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star since 2019.

However, she suffers with imposter syndrome despite her success, admitting on the show: ‘I’m riddled most of the time with imposter syndrome. Then you have to remind yourself if they didn’t think you were capable, they wouldn’t have you in.

‘I’m always really thankful for that. I love my job, I love what I do for a living. I feel really lucky.’

Stacey is currently starring in television show Stacey Sleeps Over which sees her spend 72 hours as a guest in an unusual UK home, aiming to get to the bottom of her hosts family’s lives.

Talking about the first episode, she explained she spent time with ‘trad wives’, who prioritise traditional domesticity over career ambitions.

She explained: ‘It was really interesting. We’re coming from totally opposite ends of the spectrum, but in essence that’s what the series is about.

‘It’s really important and really healthy to have conversations with people you don’t gravitate towards naturally. We’re probably more polarised than we’ve ever been. Rational, respectful debate is worthwhile.’
