The Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik has opened up about her upbringing, revealing that she always felt like an ‘outsider’ as a child.

The actress – who played neuroscientist Amy Farrah-Fowler in the hugely popular sitcom – spoke candidly about her experiences and admitted that she ‘always felt different’.

‘I don’t know if I felt normal growing up,’ the 45-year-old told Yahoo Entertainment

‘But I don’t think that had to do with the fact that I was a child actor — I think that I came from a really unusual family. So nothing felt normal for me. I always felt different.’

The actress found fame with her role in Blossom, in which she played the title character from 1991 to 1995, and said being recognised by fans added to her feeling ‘abnormal’.

‘Being on television definitely…made me feel like more of an outsider,’ she conceded. ‘Being in the public eye is definitely abnormal.

‘But there was a lot about my life that was still normal. I was still treated like a normal kid who had to go to school, and do my chores and be picked on by my brother.’

It comes after the Big Bang Theory actress – who recently starred in the Miranda reboot Call Me Kat – spoke about being a ‘compulsive overeater, an anorexic and a restrictor’ on her podcast.

The star launched her podcast Bialik’s Breakdown at the beginning of the year, and is hoping to break down taboo topics through the episodes, focusing on the stigmas around mental health.

The actress also recently won over Jeopardy! viewers after a strong start to her stint as a guest host.

The Big Bang Theory alum is one of the many guests who have been running the show following the death of iconic host Alex Trebek last November.
