Even with the legendary Eddie Murphy there on the set, the Saturday Night Live cold open couldn’t resist the lure (yet again) of U.S. politics. This is one of those sketches.
At least there were guest stars. Maya Rudolph, Larry David, Rachel Dratch, Fred Armisen, and Jason Sudeikis (replacing Woody Harrelson as Joe Biden) all popped up alongside a number of more familiar SNL players in a send-up of Thursday’s Democratic debate. Then, Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump storms the stage because not even a cast of surprise guests could make a convincing case for yet another paint-by-numbers SNL parody of the Democratic debates.
The fact that the SNL debate stage was miles more diverse than the actual one should tell you everything you need to know.
