Another 112 people have died with Covid in the past 24 hours, as the nation spends the day mourning all those lost in the pandemic.
The country has also recorded another 5,379 cases, meaning there have been 4,307,304 positive tests since the virus struck.
More than 28.3 million people have now received the first dose of a coronavirus vaccine – an incredible medical feat that experts warned may never be possible a year ago.
Meanwhile, a total of 2.3 million people have been fully immunised with their second dose.
It comes as Boris Johnson promises lockdown restrictions will soon be eased ‘once and for all’.
The Prime Minister offered his ‘sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones’ and praised the ‘great spirit shown by our nation’ ahead of a one-minute silence in tribute to those who have died with Covid.
He has also praised those who developed and rolled out jabs, parents who homeschooled their children and the public who have abided by social distancing rules over the year.
The Conservative leader said: ‘The last 12 months has taken a huge toll on us all, and I offer my sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones.
‘We should also remember the great spirit shown by our nation over this past year. We have all played our part, whether it’s working on the front line as a nurse or carer, working on vaccine development and supply, helping to get that jab into arms, home schooling your children, or just by staying at home to prevent the spread of the virus.
‘It’s because of every person in this country that lives have been saved, our NHS was protected, and we have started on our cautious road to easing restrictions once and for all.’
