Another 20 people have died with Covid-19, the latest government figures show.
The UK also recorded 2,474 new cases on Tuesday.
This is compared with 1,946 positive tests recorded last Tuesday and four further deaths.
The latest figures bring the number of confirmed cases in the UK since the pandemic began to 4,439,691 and the official death toll to 127,629.
However, this number rises to 151,765 when taking into account all fatalities with Covid-19 listed on a death certificate.
Meanwhile, the UK’s vaccination programme continues to roll out at speed with another 115,053 doses administered in a 24-hour period.
Government data up to May 10 shows that of the 53,675,733 jabs given in the UK so far, 35,587,348 were first doses.
Some 18,088,385 were second doses, an increase of 231,835.
The latest figures come after Boris Johnson said an inquiry into his government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic would be held before the next Queen’s Speech to open a new parliamentary session.
However, the length of each session is down to the prime minister, who can extend it until 2024 if he wishes.
Amid a Commons debate over the newly set out bills, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey urged the prime minister to set up the public inquiry ‘on behalf of bereaved families across the country’.
Mr Johnson responded: ‘I can certainly say that we will do that within this session.
‘I have made that clear before… I do believe that it’s essential that we have a full, proper public inquiry into the Covid pandemic.’
Elsewhere, police clashed with protesters as they chained themselves to the AstraZeneca headquarters demanding the pharmaceutical company shares blueprints for its Covid vaccine across the globe.
Footage shows scuffles between officers and demonstrators after the building in Cambridge was targeted, as well as Oxford University’s campus, on the day of AstraZeneca’s annual general meeting.
