A man who was shot by a stranger in the middle of the street joked he was ‘Iron Man’ after discovering the bullet has to remain in his body.

In 24 Hours in Police Custody, Bedfordshire Police investigate the shooting of Jakub, 23, who was targeted seemingly for no reason.

The incident, which took place in New Town, Luton, saw Jakub take a bullet straight to the chest, but he ran to his home before collapsing in the garden.

After receiving first aid, it was noticed that he wasn’t heavily bleeding, suggesting the injuries could be internal.

There was also no exit wound which meant the bullet was still inside him, causing potential further trouble.

Jakub was rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery to try and remove the bullet, but speaking to the detectives in his hospital bed, he revealed it couldn’t be removed.

‘It went through my kidney and a few other bits,’ he explained, adding that because he ran after the shooting, the bullet had moved around his body and wasn’t located.

‘Are you Superman?’ the detective asked him.

‘Maybe Iron Man, I don’t know,’ he joked back.

Two months later, and Jakub revealed he was moving to Poland, having become scared at loud noises and sudden movements, and people in hoodies walking by his house.

Justice McCann, 21, was arrested for the shooting and said he wanted to plead guilty after he was caught on CCTV.

He later broke down in tears on-screen, saying that he didn’t remember doing the incident – adding that he had been suffering from blackouts during times of stress that he tried to numb with cannabis.

His lawyers later explained that he was grown up from an abusive household that saw him smoking weed from the age of eight and getting into a life of crime.

He had attempted to get help for his mental health, but it never materialised.

Despite a letter of apology to the court, Justice was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

He’s eligible for parole in 2035.

24 Hours In Police Custody airs Mondays at 9pm on Channel 4.
