England is off to a fantastic start in the Euro 2020 final against Italy, as Luke Shaw scored a goal in just one minute and 57 seconds of the match starting.

Shaw’s opener was the quickest ever goal scored in the final of the European Championships, as well as his first ever for the England national team.

Chus Pereda previously held the record for the fastest goal in the final after his effort in Spain’s 2-1 victory over the USSR way back in 1964.

But was Shaw’s blink-and-you-miss-it-moment the fastest goal ever scored, or does that record belong to another footballer?

Here is all you need to know.

What is the fastest goal ever scored?

Despite Luke Shaw’s goal taking place in under two minutes, it is far from the fastest goal ever recorded.

That title belongs to Gavin Stokes in the 2017 match between Maryhill and Clydebank.

This match was a non-league junior football match involving two teams from the West of Scotland Super League First Division in Scottish football.

Stokes scored the goal in a jaw dropping 2.1 seconds.

However, the fastest goal officially recognised by the Football Association was during a 2004 amateur match between Cowes Sports Res. v Eastleigh Res.

Marc Burrows scored the opening goal in just 2.56 seconds of the game.

Eye-witness reports state the goal was aided by a particularly strong following wind – but it is impressive nonetheless.

Though Shaw holds the record for the fastest-ever goal scored in the European Championships final, the fastest goal ever in the competition belongs to Dmitri Kirichenko.

Kirichenko scored the opening goal just 67 seconds into the match between Russia and Greece in 2004.

The fastest goal ever scored in a World Cup final was by Hakan Şükür, who scored into just 10.8 seconds in the 2002 match between Korea Republic and Turkey.
