The Prime Minister’s roadmap out of lockdown currently states that travel abroad will be able to resume from no early than May 17. However, with mainland Europe now experiencing a third wave of the virus, Johnson has been under pressure to push this date back.
He previously advised the public to wait until the global travel taskforce had reported, before booking their summer holidays.
The taskforce is not expected to send their findings to the PM before April 12, but Johnson could today unveil the Government’s new ‘traffic light’ system for leaving the UK.
This will see summer holiday hotspots ranked by their coronavirus status, with Brits allowed to fly to ‘green’ destinations, so-long as they complete a test on their return.
‘Amber’ countries would require passengers to have a test and quarantine at home upon their return, while travel to ‘red’ countries could either be banned or require people complete a 10-day stay at one of the UK’s quarantine hotels when they return.
Safer ‘green’ countries expected to be opened first include the Cayman Islands, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bermuda and Barbados, due to successful vaccination programmes around the Caribbean.
The EU is still struggling with a slow vaccination rollout and rising infections, meaning the Government is unlikely to give Brits the green-light to fly to Europe until August.
During the press conference, Johnson may also discuss the news that everyone in England will be able to access a free and rapid coronavirus test twice a week from April 9.
The lateral flow tests, which can provide results in around 30 minutes, will be available to anyone, regardless of whether they are showing Covid-19 symptoms.
It is also likely he will discuss whether England can move forward to the next stage of easing lockdown. April 12 is due to see pub beer gardens return, as well as gyms, hairdressers and non-essential shops.
