In 2018, Lindsay Schneider took on one of the biggest adventures of her life: climbing Mount Everest.

And it was during that trip, and taking inspiration from a tragic loss, she founded the best-selling false tan brand, Get Into The Limelight.

‘Self tanner has always been my beauty must-have, giving me what I refer to as proverbial superpowers,’ 32-year-old Schneider, from California, tells Metro.co.uk. ‘One layer of self-tanner makes me feel like I can accomplish anything.’

Lindsay explains that, while using self tan empowers her personally and gives her a confidence boost, she wants to create self-confidence in diverse communities.

‘Growing up with a father who was gay has made diversity and inclusion a big part of my life,’ says Lindsay. ‘But my world fell apart when my dad took his own life in 2012.’

After her dad tragically passed away, Lindsay says that she was determined to rebuild her life through travelling. After four years of backpacking around the world, she decided to take a giant step outside her comfort zone and take on one of her toughest challenges to date.

‘I enjoyed travelling to countries without many tourists, like Moldova, and Egypt and India where it’s not advised to go as a solo female traveller’ she explains. ‘but I felt like I had seen and done it all and frankly, I wanted a challenge.’

It was then that Lindsay made the decision to head to the Himalayas and take on the tallest mountain in the world.

‘With zero trekking experience and a lot on my mind, I flew into Lukla, which is know as the most dangerous airport in the world,’ she recalls. ‘I had made the decision to trek to Everest’s base camp.’

During her trek to base camp, Lindsay originated the idea for an inclusive self tanning brand and was certain that this was to be her next challenge to conquer.

‘No matter how much I work or travel, I’ve always tried to maintain a healthy lifestyle full of self-care, including cooking healthy food working out and applying beauty products,’ she says.

‘Just one layer of false tan makes me feel unstoppable, and I remember looking at the self-tan I was using during my trek to base camp and thinking that I had a love-hate relationship with every bottle. Nothing I was using had exactly what I was looking for in one magical bottle.’

Lindsay had previous experience sourcing products after living and working in Dongguan, China, and using this product development expertise, she began the search to find a source in the US to help her create her tanning brand.

Shortly after, Get Into The Limelight was born.

Lindsay experimented with different ingredients, shades, and scents, tweaking the product until she got a sulphate-free, paraben-free, and 100% vegan self-tanning product that smells like chocolate, incorporating everything she wanted but hadbn’t been able to find in one product.

Get Into The Limelight may have started as a solo project, it quickly turned into a family-run project.

‘I couldn’t have done it without my family. My mum helped me pack up over 10,000 orders while I still lived abroad and my uncle, who suffers from muscular dystrophy, said that his favourite part of his day was to pick up the orders and drive them to the local post office,’ she recalls.

‘My entire family has been an integral part of the brand’s growth and success and I could not have got to this point without their support.’

Just a few few years after its launch, Get Into The Limelight quickly became a best-seller. The unique formula is ECOCERT DHA and dermatologist approved, earning itself plenty of celebrity fans and an impressive social media following.

Get Into The Limelight is currently stocked in Macy’s stores nationwide, as well as being available to purchase online and in boutiques and spas across the US and Canada.

Although currently unavailable outside of the US and Canada, Lindsay hopes to be able to stock the tan internationally in the future, including the UK.

Get Into The Limelight’s collection features tanning mousse, applicators and exfoliating accessories, and while she plans to extend the range further with tanning drops and a DHA extender, her most current project is being a mum to her seven-week old baby girl.

‘I call this brand my first baby, but now, as a mumpreneur, I’m more motivated than ever to not only grow the brand, but to also teach my daughter about the importance of self-love, confidence and inclusion.’

Get Into The Limelight has been an important journey for Lindsay and she feels incredibly grateful to have created a successful business in her father’s memory.

‘The sudden loss of my dad is why I started this journey in the first place,’ she notes. ‘Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think it would lead me to grow Get Into The Limelight into what it is today.’
