The 30-year-old star, who recently debuted on Raw in the United States after rising up on the Scottish independent scene and working for the company in NXT UK, and she’s recalled her first meeting with the boss as he promised they’d be having ‘a lot of fun’ with her new alter ego.
She exclusively told Metro.co.uk: ‘I met him on the first day that I got to Raw and I was super scared because obviously I’ve been a wrestling fan for the majority of my life.
‘He was super cool, he just said, “Welcome to Raw, so glad that you could come over, we’re gonna have a lot fun with your character.” I was like, “Oh good, I like to have fun, I consider myself a professional play fighter”, and he was just [laughing and applauding].
‘So that was a really cool experience! He’s always super happy with me when I come back and seems to absolutely love it when I kill people so I’m just gonna keep doing that!’
Fans weren’t sure what to think when the Scottish wrestler was brought up to the red brand alongside the returning Eva Marie, and the naysayers were even more concerned when they found out the artist formerly known as Piper Niven (and before that, Viper) had been renamed.
‘When it was first pitched to me, not gonna lei, I was bit like, “Ah OK, I’m not really sure about this, but OK”. It did take me a minute to get comfortable with it,’ she admitted, noting that getting her own entrance music and seeing young fans responding so positively is what made everything click.
‘I saw the kids dancing. We do this thing with the Doudrops, and to see them do that – I was like, I really understand this now,’ she beamed.
‘I get who Doudrop is and who she’s supposed to be, and I’m super comfortable with it and I’m super happy. I know a lot of people are still resistant to the name change but just give me a couple of months and you’re gonna be like, “I love Doudrop.” ‘
It’s been a whirlwind for the rising star, who just had three weeks notice that she was heading to Florida to start her life on the main roster.
‘It’s such a culture shock being here in America. You think because they’re both English-speaking countries, “It’ll be fine, it’ll be the same” – it’s absolutely not the same,’ she laughed.
‘I’m getting used to it. I’m getting used to the crazy Florida drivers, all the different sorts of things. It’s absolutely mental, but I’m really enjoying it.’
Doudrop has thrive on the main roster and thrown herself headfirst into her new character to the point that it’s no wonder Vince is seemingly impressed – particularly with her attitude to work.
‘If I wasn’t able to laugh at myself I don’t think I’d have lasted five minutes in this business! The thing is, if you can laugh at yourself, no one’s laughing at you, they’re laughing with you,’ she giggled, admitting that outlook has come with experience.
‘When I first started wrestling I was horrifically shy, couldn’t look people in the eye. It was like, “This really shy, conscious girl needs to put on Lycra and jump around in front of a crowd. Ooh, that’s horrifying!”
‘So, what I had to learn to do was like, really play the character. “OK, well I don’t have to be confident, but my character, she’s confident. So, I’m just a confident character”. Gradually, through time, the lines got a little blurred and I became her, she became her, and here we are!’
Here we are indeed, with Doudrop living out her dream of travelling the world as a professional wrestler, entertaining fans and loving every single second – which is something she hopes never goes away.
‘Sometimes I still pinch myself,’ she admitted with obvious glee. ‘I love to travel, I love to go new places, see new sights, try new things.
‘A lot of the time, when we travel to a new state and I’m in my car and I’m driving to wherever we’re going, I’m like, “This is my life! Ahhh!” [laughs] I still get caught up, but I hope I never lose that excitement.
‘I think it’s super important to enjoy all the little things and be excited about your life!’
