The Big Ten underwent some interesting upsets in their first week of action last Saturday and there was another upset in the conference’s second week of games. Just a week after losing to Rutgers, Michigan State upset Michigan as the road underdog on Saturday.
Michigan State would jump out to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, only for Michigan to match them on the ensuing drive. After driving the offense down the field, Wolverines quarterback, Joe Milton, handed the ball off to Blake Corum, who found the edge and got into the end zone to tie the game at seven.
However, Michigan State’s offense would show signs of life, with quarterback Rocky Lombardi passing for 323 yards and three scores. At the same time, wide receiver Ricky White would give the Wolverines fits all game, catching eight passes for 196 yards and a touchdown.
While the game seemed to be nearing a close finish, the Spartans would secure a 27-17 lead with nearly five minutes remaining in the game.
Coming into the contest, Michigan State were double-digit underdogs against their interstate rivals in Ann Harbor. Last week, the Spartans were defeated by Rutgers by a score of 38-27 after turning the ball over an eye-popping seven times.
On the other hand, Michigan looked to make a statement a week ago by beating Minnesota 49-24 on the road. But with Michigan State cleaning up their turnover woes from their first game, they were able to take down the Wolverines.
With a win on Saturday, Michigan State has now beaten Michigan at Ann Harbor five out of the last seven times dating back to 2008. The criticism of Jim Harbaugh not being able to win important games in the Big Ten will definitely grow louder this week.
