The 34-year-old joined United on an initial one-year deal last summer and a clause in his deal means that can be extended by a further 12 months if club and player agree.
However, Cavani’s father recently suggested that he was unhappy in the north-west and wanted to return closer to home by joining Argentine giants Boca Juniors.
Cavani was upset that the Football Association saw fit to ban him after an ill-judged Instagram post and Uruguay assistant Mario Rebollo says the veteran should return to South America.
‘It helps the national team if Cavani goes to Boca or wherever,’ Rebollo told 2 De Punta.
‘The priority is that he plays where he is comfortable and with a good competitive level. If he’s close to here it’d be great, but if he’s not comfortable he would not bear it much.
‘It would be good for us if Cavani plays where he feels most comfortable. It makes no difference to me if it’s Boca or another place, just where he’s better.
‘We have to have him with rhythm and competition.’
Cavani has struck seven goals in 26 appearances for United and he’s proved a hit with supporters for his work ethic and eye for goal.
The former Paris Saint-Germain striker was handed the coveted no.7 shirt that had been earmarked for Jadon Sancho but it looks increasingly likely that the shirt will be available again this summer.
