Some American children have watched so much Peppa Pig that they’ve started speaking with English accents.

The British programme has skyrocketed in popularity around the world, with more kids than ever tuning in to watch Peppa’s antics during the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, its having a bigger impact than some parents may have realised, with some American children taking on the Received Pronunciation (RP) English accent.

One father in California told the Wall Street Journal that his four-year-old daughter has mimicked Peppa’s accent to the point that she calls American gas stations ‘petrol stations’, has switched from ‘cookies’ to ‘biscuits’ and she asks him if he’s ‘having a cup of tea’ when he gets his morning coffee.

Meanwhile, a Seattle-based mum learned that her daughter, three-year-old Hazel, was autistic through her love of the show.

Sharing a video of the little one on TikTok, she showed how Hazel’s picked up plenty of Peppa’s catchphrases, including: ‘How clever!’

She’s since used the show to help Hazel with her language skills.

Meanwhile, a Boston-based mother has credited the programme with making her four-year-old daughter Cecilie ‘sound like a little lady’.

‘She says “lovely” and “please” and “thank you” all the time,’ she told the publication.

Peppa Pig is thought to have kept its spot as the world’s second most in demand children’s show over the past 12 months, beaten to the top spot only by Spongebob Squarepants.

The series follows young Peppa and her adventures, as well as her family, Mummy Pig, Daddy Pig, and her brother George.

Aside from her TV success, Peppa has become quite the music sensation, launching her first album in 2019 and going up against Iggy Azalea in the charts.

Harley Bird, the former voice of Peppa, is featured on several of the tracks, which include Bing Bong Zoo, Super Potato’s Theme, and Jumping In Muddy Puddles.

The 18-year-old had voiced the character since she was five, but left the role in January last year.

It was later announced that Amelie Bea, now 10, would take over in the role.
