The Gunners will go into the second leg of their semi-final with the Spanish side on Thursday at a 2-1 deficit after a strange game earlier in the week.
Mikel Arteta’s side were woeful in the first half, falling 2-0 behind and seeing Dani Ceballos sent off in what looked like a disastrous night for them.
However, the fought back after the break and a Nicolas Pepe penalty meant that they are only narrowly behind ahead of the all-important clash at the Emirates.
Former Tottenham manager Sherwood feels the pressure is on Arteta to get a result and avoid their worse season ‘in recent history’ and he thinks the Spaniard will manage it.
That is where he thinks the run will end, though, with Manchester United having one foot in the final after a 6-2 first-leg win over Roma in the books and looking much the better of the two remaining English sides.
‘It would be the worst season Arsenal have had in recent history,’ Sherwood told Premier League Productions on the potential of an Arsenal defeat in the semi-final.
‘Fine margins, could end up winning it, qualify for the Champions League, brilliant.
‘Would you put your money on it? I would put my money on them going through against Villarreal, I think they’re capable of doing that, I think they can score at the Emirates.
‘Can they beat Man Utd in the final? Not on the evidence of what we’ve seen this season.
‘But they have won some big games this year, but their consistency and confidence levels are very, very low at the moment.’
With the Gunners tenth in the Premier League table, Arteta is well aware that his season hinges on the game against Villarreal, and hopefully a final to come after.
‘The Premier League is the competition where it is not in our hands to achieve what we wanted to do, because there are other teams in front of us,’ he said.
‘The only thing we can control is our performances and results and this is our main focus. Then we know that the semi-final is the crucial moment of the season.’
